Texas Dentist Charged After 4-Year-Old’s Death
A dentist in Texas is facing charges following a routine dental procedure that tragically resulted in the death of a 4-year-old girl, as reported in recent news.
Chrishell Hemphill, who runs Cuddle Kids Dental Care in Fort Worth, was arrested at her workplace on Wednesday. This comes after an incident on April 1, involving a procedure that has since been deemed unnecessary, which led to the death of Aisana Rodriguez Arriaga.
The girl, described as “kind and loving,” was administered a lethal dose of painkillers during surgery for a condition known as tongue-tie. Pediatricians and other specialists had previously stated that this procedure wasn’t necessary, according to the arrest report.
During the procedure, Aitana received an overdose of Demerol, a potent painkiller, along with two other sedatives and nitrous oxide. Hemphill, 48, attempted to perform CPR alongside another dentist when Aysana became unresponsive but was ultimately unable to revive her. The child was rushed to the hospital where her death was attributed to meperidine poisoning.
Aitana’s family expressed their devastation over the sudden tragedy, sharing that she was “full of life and kindness.” They mentioned how her joyful nature could light up any room she entered.
The report noted that the amount of meperidine present in Aitana’s system was significantly high, even for an adult, and that she had received the medication twice. Hemphill reportedly miscalculated the risks involved with the drug combinations, which could be deadly. The warrant also indicated that she administered the incorrect medication while attempting to revive the girl.
Detective J. Spraggins remarked on the investigation, highlighting the clear negligence that contributed to Aitana’s death, according to Hemphill’s own statements, as well as those of her staff and medical professionals.
Both Aitana’s pediatrician and an ear, nose, and throat specialist confirmed to investigators that they had previously evaluated Aitana and found no indication that she required surgery for a tongue tie.
Hemphill, who is originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, faces serious charges, including injury to a child, which may lead to a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $10,000.
