Denver mayor says CEOs ask him why they can’t hire migrants

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston claimed that conservative CEOs of various companies were calling him “every day” asking why they couldn't hire people who were allegedly illegal immigrants or asylum seekers.

Johnston told Fox News.american newsroom'', reinforcing the argument of many Democratic leaders that sanctuary cities need more money to solve their record-setting illegal immigration problem.

The mayor is reportedly focusing on three steps to address the problem, including faster asylum applications, work permits, and a nationally coordinated immigration system.

The mayor said asylum applications “should take 30 or 90 days, not six years.”

Johnston was asked by host Dana Perino whether he thought giving work permits to illegal immigrants in the country would encourage other immigrants to cross the border.

“We're asking Congress to take action on what they think the right border entry policy is. That's above my pay grade,” the Denver politician responded. . “Whether they decide to let 10,000 people in a day or 5,000 people a day in, what's important to us is that when they arrive in our city, they can do the work. “There's a need. I don't think there's anything more un-American than having someone arrive and beg me every day for a chance to work in your city,” he added.

Democrats also explained that undocumented people and immigrants are skilled workers just looking for work.

“These are hard-working, hard-working, skilled people who want jobs. And every day I get calls from CEOs. Conservative CEOs say, 'I have a job opening.' Why can't we hire these people?' Let's put them to work.'' I agree with that sentiment. ”

About 10% of Denver's budget goes toward immigration assistance, the mayor said, and city leaders ultimately suggested that the federal government send more money to illegal immigrants rather than deter them. .

“I called the White House,” Johnston told host Bill Hemmer. “We have said we need more support from the government, which is why we have a supplementary budget for that.”

Johnston later compared illegal immigrants, who primarily come from Central and South America, to refugees from Ukraine and Afghanistan.

“We want to make sure that countries work together to determine where migrants should arrive and where there is capacity to accommodate them, just as they did with refugees from Ukraine and refugees from Afghanistan,” he continued. “We know how to do this.”
