Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington recently opened up about his past struggles with alcohol, which he got sober 10 years ago. Washington, who recently starred in the sequel film Gladiator II, explained what his alcoholism is like, including drinking two bottles of wine a day. related Reported.
“The wine was mine” Washington I wrote “And now I was drinking a $4,000 bottle just because I had it left,” says a new article in Esquire. I called Spirits and said, “Send me two bottles of the best of this or that.'' And my wife says, “Why do you only order two?” I said, “If you ask for more, I'll drink more.” So I limited myself to two bottles and drank both over the course of a day.
He added that in 1999, he built a wine cellar in his home that could hold about 10,000 bottles, and spent a lot of money on it as a way to hide his addiction.
“I had ideal ideas about wine tasting and things like that, and at first it was just that,” the actor explained. “And it's a very subtle thing. I mean, I drank the best. I drank the best.
“I did a lot of damage to my body,” he continued. “Let's see. I've been clean for 10 years this December. I quit at 60 and haven't had a thimble's worth since. Now I'm doing things like I'm 70. It's opening up for me. That's okay. This is the final chapter. What do you want to do when you get 30 more? My mother lived to be 97.
Back in 2017Washington said her mother was a big factor in her achieving sobriety.
“When I was 59, my mother said, 'Denzel, you're doing a lot of good.' You have to do good the right way, and no matter what I say or do, you have to do good. “You know what,” he said. “I don't drink anymore. I don't do any of that. I'm all about this message…You have to be fearless and shameless to share it in a way that millennials know.” yeah.”
He likened his alcoholism to young people these days and their addiction to social media.
“We understand very well that we depend on this [he said, holding up a phone]” he said. “It's not their fault. It's an extension and reflection of our own free will… I pray for your generation… What an opportunity! Because we have to go through this… Don't get discouraged. We're here now. We can't put it back in the box.”
