Denzel Washington Clarifies the Pronunciation of His Name

Denzel Washington, the talented actor, has taken a moment to clarify how to pronounce his name correctly. During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Washington, who is now 70, shared how, throughout his life, many people have mispronounced his name. He attributed this confusion partly to his mother, Renice Washington.

The discussion arose while Washington and Kimmel were chatting about the number of NFL players who share the actor’s name. Kimmel noted that there are currently four players named Denzel in the league, a stark contrast to 1987, when there were none.

“I know. There are a lot of Denzels, and this is how I know they were named after me because my name is not pronounced Denzel,” Washington explained, humorously emphasizing the correct pronunciation.

He elaborated, indicating that his name should be pronounced with a short “E”, rather than the typical long vowel sound many might assume. The actor revealed that the reason for the mispronunciation is rooted in his upbringing; both he and his father answered when his mother called for “Denzel.”

“I’m Denzel Jr., my dad is Denzel Hayes Washington Sr., and when my mother called us both, it created confusion,” he shared. “That’s how it was pronounced in our family.” His casual explanation brought light chuckles from the audience.

Kimmel chimed in, noting there are two Denzels on the Arizona Cardinals football team, and he added that before Washington won his first Oscar, the name Denzel wasn’t that common among NFL players. However, after Washington’s success in the industry, particularly after winning an Academy Award for “Glory,” the name gained popularity.

Kimmel humorously suggested that perhaps Washington should receive some form of compensation since his name has inspired so many in the sports realm. Washington nodded in agreement, adding that a small cut from jersey sales wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Interestingly, Washington had touched on this naming story before during a 2013 appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” where the pronunciation challenge amused both him and the host.
