Call for Transgender Health Care for Detained Immigrants
A Congressman from Texas, who recently lost his re-election campaign, is advocating for government-funded transgender medical care for undocumented immigrants in detention facilities.
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) held a press conference where he criticized federal authorities for failing to provide transgender health care to these individuals. He expressed concern over the conditions faced by transgender individuals in detention, suggesting they are a direct result of harmful policies that withhold medical care and protections.
During the event, Green called out Markwayne Mullin, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, urging him to improve what he termed “hazardous conditions” reported at detention centers.
He stated, “Transgender individuals should not live in fear of discrimination that prevents them from accessing necessary medical care.” He further highlighted that, while many communities are suffering from negative immigration policies, transgender individuals face unique vulnerabilities.
Additionally, Green pointed fingers at the Trump administration, accusing it of reversing Biden administration policies that were designed to protect transgender immigrants and ensure they receive proper health care.
He compared the treatment of transgender detainees to the racism he himself has experienced, stating emphatically, “No one should be punished for who they are. My own experiences with discrimination highlight the need for change.”
Green’s message underscores the ongoing debate regarding immigration policies and the treatment of vulnerable populations. His press conference attracted attention, especially as he has been known for his vocal presence during political events.
The press conference is available for viewing on his official YouTube channel.
