Deported immigrant faces charges for stabbing on Charlotte light rail

Incident Involving Illegal Immigrant Stabbing in Charlotte

On Friday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) submitted a motion to detain an undocumented immigrant accused of stabbing someone on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina. This incident comes just four months after the tragic stabbing of 23-year-old Ukrainian immigrant Irina Zalutka, with both attacks allegedly linked to Oscar Gerardo Solorzano Garcia, a 33-year-old from Honduras who has previously been deported twice from the U.S.

In this latest event, Solorzano Garcia is alleged to have boarded a streetcar and attacked a male passenger with a large knife. He now faces serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon, as reported by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

According to law enforcement, the victim remains in critical but stable condition.

In response to the incident, former President Trump expressed his concern on social media, questioning what was happening in Charlotte and criticizing Democrats for the situation.

“ICE filed a motion for detention to ensure that this illegal offender is not returned to our North Carolina neighborhood,” noted Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). She added that there are worries about the county’s past non-cooperation regarding detainees.

Solorzano Garcia’s record includes prior convictions for various offenses, such as aggravated assault, evidence tampering, and illegal reentry, according to McLaughlin.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated that this incident should never have happened, emphasizing that ICE’s listings are meant to protect communities. She highlighted a history of the county failing to respect ICE’s detainers.

Solorzano Garcia was first removed from the U.S. during the Trump administration in 2018, and again in 2021. It’s not clear how he reentered the country illegally for the third time.

The DHS has recently launched Operation Charlotte Web in North Carolina to specifically target “criminal illegal aliens.” This initiative aims to curb the impact of sanctuary policies that they claim allow these individuals to live freely in communities.

According to DHS, “Nearly 1,400 detainees across North Carolina are being held without honor, releasing criminal illegal aliens into neighborhoods.”
