During a visit to the SHOT show floor on Tuesday, Deputy U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche discussed the Justice Department’s efforts to challenge restrictions on the Second Amendment.
Blanche remarked that the Justice Department had recently opposed Hawaii’s gun regulations in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.
He pointed out that Hawaii is among several states attempting to implement strict concealed carry laws. It’s like they are trying to navigate ways to impose the maximum number of limitations possible.
He stated, “We enacted a very restrictive law in Hawaii. If you have the right to bear arms, the right to carry a firearm, you still can’t do that. We chose to appeal because it’s quite uncommon for the Department of Justice to step in, but we felt it was necessary. Ongoing discussions are happening as we speak.”
Blanche expressed concern over the left’s vigorous attempts to limit gun rights: “Their tactics are so clever and unusually determined that they infringe on the Second Amendment.”
We asked him if the Justice Department is prioritizing the rollback of regulations that would facilitate private sales of firearms among law-abiding citizens.
He replied, “We’re on the verge of announcing new regulations that address multiple issues, and one key aspect is ensuring that firearms reach people who are legally permitted to own them. At the same time, we want citizens allowed to sell their guns to one another and participate in commerce without fearing repercussions from the ATF over minor infractions.”
Blanche highlighted that a comprehensive strategy requires both removing existing regulations and reforming the ATF, which aligns with the priorities of the Trump administration.
He expressed hope that Americans will witness substantial regulatory changes that reflect President Trump’s agenda.
Blanche mentioned that the Second Amendment has faced undue scrutiny and challenges, stating, “I hope President Trump stands firm against these attacks… It’s important for gun owners and manufacturers to see that we are committed to implementing President Trump’s policies. If you wish to own, buy, or carry a firearm, you have the Second Amendment right to do so, though there are some peripheral restrictions.”
