Deputy dies and two hurt as mother’s eviction of her son turns violent.

A Florida sheriff’s deputy was killed, another deputy was injured, and a locksmith is in critical condition following an incident on Friday morning in a coastal area north of West Palm Beach, as officers attempted to evict a man at the request of his mother.

Deputy Terry Sweeting-Maschkow, a 25-year veteran of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, was shot inside the Bermuda Club near Vero Beach. She was part of a team of three deputies who arrived at the home around 9 a.m. to remove 37-year-old Michael Halberstam, who was allegedly causing distress to his mother.

Investigators reported that Halberstam opened fire as soon as he stepped outside the house, fatally wounding Sweeting-Maschkow. Deputy Florentino “Tino” Arispe was shot in the shoulder but managed to retreat to safety, while the locksmith sustained serious injuries.

Sergeant Gary Carlos returned fire, hitting Halberstam multiple times. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Sweeting-Maschkow, 47, had dedicated her career to the sheriff’s office for 25 years. Sheriff Eric Flowers commented that she lost her life during what seemed like a routine service call, describing her as a compassionate individual who would be greatly missed.

Flowers expressed deep sorrow, stating, “My heart is truly broken.” The sheriff emphasized the lasting impact of her loss on the department.

Records indicated that officers had responded to calls from Halberstam’s mother seven times throughout November, highlighting ongoing concerns about his behavior.

Background information about Halberstam reveals a history of legal issues, including drug charges and assault, but there was no legal barrier preventing him from owning a firearm. Investigators also found troubling posts on his social media that criticized the sheriff’s office.

As the investigation unfolded, Sweeting-Maschkow’s family members were left struggling to come to terms with their loss. Her mother-in-law described her as a beloved figure, stating, “She passed away today a hero. It’s unbelievable.”

A somber procession took place later that evening, with law enforcement officials escorting her flag-draped coffin from the scene to the coroner’s office, and members of the community lined the roads to pay their respects.

The sheriff’s office later released a heartfelt statement announcing Sweeting-Maschkow’s passing, saying her commitment to serving the community would continue to inspire others.

In response to the tragedy, national leaders, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, expressed condolences and solidarity with the families of the officers involved.

The Halberstam family released a statement expressing their sorrow over the unfortunate events, requesting privacy as they navigate through this difficult time.
