A sheriff’s deputy in Florida, who had received multiple commendations for his bravery and service, fatally shot his ex-girlfriend during a broadcasted altercation before taking his own life.
The victim, Mandy Fackler, left two children aged 12 and 9 behind. Friends have shared memories highlighting her role as a devoted mother.
Troy Sabets, the deputy in question, had worked with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years and had served in the Marine Corps. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri described the relationship between Sabets and Fackler as “tumultuous,” marked by ups and downs.
On the day of the incident, Gualtieri noted that Sabets confronted Fackler outside her home after she returned from a day at the beach around 5:30 PM. Witnesses reported her yelling for her television, holding a gun. During the chaos, when she attempted to call 911, Sabets took her phone away. She then instructed her children to go inside the house.
Unfortunately, that was the last time the children would see their mother.
Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco praised the bravery of her children, who managed to call 911 and provide critical information to responders. When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered Fackler’s car with the door ajar and her phone inside.
Investigators quickly mobilized K-9 units and drones to track down Sabets. Approximately 90 minutes post-altercation, they found his vehicle in nearby Spring Hill. Upon investigation, they discovered both Fackler and Sabets deceased within the car.
Nocco mentioned that it was unclear at what moment Sabets took the lives of both himself and Fackler. Fortunately, the children were unharmed and were with their biological father during this tragic event.
Reflecting on the incident, Nocco highlighted how the children should have been preparing for school, but instead were facing the overwhelming loss of their mother. He commended their composure and obedience in following their mother’s instructions.
He expressed hope for the children, stating, “Your mother is looking down from heaven, and she is so proud of you both… you did the right thing.”
Gualtieri, regarding Sabets’ past achievements, mentioned that he had been recognized for his life-saving actions on several occasions. In 2014, he was celebrated for intervening to stop a man from jumping off a bridge, an act that earned him the title of “everyday MVP” from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Every commendation notwithstanding, Gualtieri was clear that Sabets’ actions that day stripped him of his status as a law enforcement officer. “The moment he committed a crime, he became a criminal,” he noted. This tragic incident deeply impacts the community, leaving many in mourning and shock.
