Derek Carr, the Saints’ $150 million quarterback, has to retire due to a shoulder injury.

New Orleans Saints Veteran Retires Amid Injury Challenges

The veteran player for the New Orleans Saints has chosen to retire, as announced by the team on Saturday. This decision follows sustained injuries, including a laceration on his lip and a degenerative rotator cuff issue affecting his right shoulder.

At 34 years old, Carr has had an extensive career, playing 11 seasons in the NFL after being drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft from Fresno State.

Signed as a free agent by the Saints in 2023, Carr’s performance in New Orleans was a mix of highs and lows. He ended with a starter record of 14 wins and 13 losses, dealing with various injuries that caused him to miss seven games last season.

Throughout his career, Carr accumulated impressive stats, throwing for 41,245 yards, with 257 touchdowns against 112 interceptions. He leaves the game with a starting record of 77 wins and 92 losses and unfortunately, without a playoff victory.

His retirement coincides with the Saints drafting Tyler Schaff from Louisville in a high second-round pick, hinting at a new quarterback for the future, although it’s unclear how soon he will be ready to step into that role.

Additional quarterbacks on the Saints roster include second-year Prospencer Lattler and third-year player Jake Haener.
