Derik Queen, the Pelicans' draft pick, made a lighthearted comment about his new 'role' on LinkedIn.

Derrick Queen from Maryland was quick to update her LinkedIn profile following the 2025 NBA Draft.

After the Pelicans made trades to secure a center, Queen posted about her new job on the professional networking site, which sparked quite a buzz online.

“I’m excited to announce that I’ve begun a new role as a professional basketball player with the Pelicans in New Orleans!” Queen shared, adding, “I look forward to arriving in New Orleans and connecting with the fans!”

New Orleans traded the 23rd pick and an unprotected first-round pick in 2026 to the Hawks, which allowed them to secure the 13th pick.

On a recent podcast with “The Ringer,” Simmons referred to the deal as “one of the top five stupidest trades of the decade.”

Before selecting Queen, the Pelicans evaluated Oklahoma point guard Jeremiah at the 7th spot.

The team even highlighted Queen’s LinkedIn update on X, humorously stating, “Derrick Queen’s Draft Night Schedule: 1. Get Drafted 2. Update LinkedIn,” accompanied by a crying emoji.

Standing at 6-foot-9, Queen averaged 16.5 points, nine rebounds, and 2.2 steals and blocks during his freshman year at Maryland.

Queen mentioned he had spoken “most” to the Pelicans during the pre-draft period.

“I’m pretty close with [Pelicans GM] Troy Weaver’s son, Troy Weaver Jr. I called him and joked about going to the Pelicans, but I’m thrilled to finally join them,” she said on draft night.

She expressed hope that she could contribute to a winning culture and be a versatile asset for New Orleans on both ends of the floor.

Queen conveyed that the Pelicans’ decision to trade up for her was significant. “I’m just ready to show them why they made that investment, and I’m excited to represent the Pelicans,” she added.
