Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Calls for Special Legislative Session on Redistricting
Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced a special legislative session focused on congressional redistricting, set to take place in April. This announcement came during a press conference on Wednesday.
“I will be convening a Special Session of the Legislature focused on redistricting to ensure that Florida’s congressional maps accurately reflect the population of our state. Every Florida resident deserves to be represented fairly and constitutionally,” DeSantis stated on a social media platform.
“This Special Session will occur following the regular legislative session, allowing lawmakers to address pressing issues first before concentrating on redistricting in April,” he explained.
The governor mentioned that the session is likely to occur from April 20th to 24th, just ahead of the candidate filing deadline.
“We are scheduling it for late April, partly due to a forthcoming Supreme Court decision that may impact the validity of various districts across the country, including some in Florida,” DeSantis remarked, referencing a significant ruling that could alter provisions of the Voting Rights Act.
“Our population has evolved significantly over the past four or five years. We need to ensure proper apportionment so that everyone has equal representation,” he added.
Florida joins several states in reassessing district maps as the midterm elections approach. Other states like Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio have also redrawn maps favoring the GOP, with Florida likely to follow suit. Meanwhile, California has introduced Proposition 50 to counter these shifts, aiming to maintain a balance of representation.
In Florida, congressional redistricting plans are developed by the legislature, requiring approval from both the House and Senate, before ultimately needing the governor’s endorsement or veto. This structure gives the governor significant influence over the redistricting process.
