DeSantis Changes Name of $50K Florida Student Debate Award to Honor Charlie Kirk

Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the Florida Citizens and Debate Initiative (FCDI) will rename its statewide championship scholarship to the Charlie Kirk Award. This change honors the late founder of Turning Point USA for his fervent support of civil dialogue and free speech, especially in Florida.

“We’re excited to share that $50,000 will be distributed in scholarships for the winners of the April debate competition,” DeSantis stated. Winners will receive $25,000, while runners-up will get $15,000 and semifinalists will earn $10,000. We’re expecting over 600 students to take part in this competition, and it’s going to be wonderful to present the newly named Kirk Prize,” he added.

DeSantis also highlighted the connection between civic engagement and responsibilities. He mentioned, “Free speech and civil debate are crucial for a democratic republic’s survival. These principles are increasingly at risk. One-third of college students think it’s acceptable to use violence to silence opinions they disagree with. The case of Charlie Kirk—who was tragically killed on a college campus while trying to engage in dialogue—is a stark illustration of this danger.”

The Florida Citizens and Debate Initiative, established with the Marcus Foundation’s support in 2019, has expanded significantly. Now, over 330 teams from all 67 counties, comprising more than 4,200 students, are participating, up from 59 teams in 11 districts previously.

DeSantis has continuously linked Florida’s civic activism to the broader lessons from Kirk’s life and untimely death. Following Kirk’s assassination in September, he noted that the killing reflects a troubling intolerance toward opposing views—one of the most severe instances of hostility to free expression in academic settings.

He further remarked that “tens of millions” of Americans resonate with Kirk’s values. DeSantis praised Kirk for bravely expressing his beliefs in an environment that often challenged him, emphasizing that “robust argument” cultivates critical thinking skills beyond the classroom.

Efforts to memorialize Kirk are increasingly visible across Florida. In Lake County, officials have unanimously decided to designate part of a road as the “Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway.” Similarly, the city of Melbourne is considering renaming part of Cypress Avenue to “Charlie Kirk Lane.”

Plans are also in motion at New College of Florida to install a privately funded statue of Kirk seated at a debate table, symbolizing his dedication to free speech and civil discussion. Additionally, Ave Maria University will feature a bronze sculpture titled “Jesus Comforting Kirk,” crafted by renowned Catholic sculptor Timothy Schmalz, marking the inaugural piece in Kirk’s memorial series.
