DeSantis Sends Lieutenant to California to Retrieve Fugitive
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis dispatched his lieutenant to California to apprehend Haljinder Singh, an undocumented immigrant from India. Singh is accused of killing three individuals after making an illegal U-turn on the Florida turnpike near Port St. Lucie.
“I sent Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins to California to arrest Haljinder Singh,” DeSantis shared. He emphasized that fleeing to California, often referred to as a “Sanctuary State,” won’t protect Singh from facing justice in Florida. “He will be held accountable for his actions,” he added.
Singh, who managed to obtain a commercial driver’s license in California, is alleged to have created a dangerous situation by using a restricted crossover, leading to the tragic incident involving multiple fatalities.
Collins, who was appointed lieutenant governor just last week, is described as a veteran and former senator. DeSantis has even dubbed him the “Chuck Norris of Florida Politics,” recognizing his dedication to addressing serious issues such as the return of citizens from Israel amid rising tensions.
Collins traveled to California on Wednesday to facilitate Singh’s transfer back to Florida. The case has highlighted broader debates surrounding illegal immigration, with some like Representative Brian Mast expressing concern that Singh might feel safer in California due to its sanctuary laws. This starkly contrasts with Florida’s stance, as Attorney General James Usmierer is focused on enforcing laws that limit illegal immigration.
Currently, Florida’s immigration enforcement policies are under scrutiny in a Miami court, with a federal judge ruling that the state must halt certain practices mandated by the previous administration.
DeSantis plans to address Singh’s case further in a news conference later, expressing hope that justice will be served. Meanwhile, Mast raises the issue that stricter oversight is needed for commercial driving licenses, especially to prevent dangerous individuals from getting behind the wheel.
