Florida Governor Signs Law Against False Reports
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has enacted new legislation targeting the spread of malicious false reports, particularly from certain influencers with ideological motivations.
On Wednesday, DeSantis signed HB 279 in response to various recent incidents where conservative influencers have falsely reported serious events across the nation.
The new law criminalizes making false reports that require emergency responses, classifying the offense as a third-degree felony if it results in serious injuries or permanent harm, and a second-degree felony in instances leading to death.
It also lowers the threshold for felony charges, allowing for prosecution after just two false reports, and requires offenders to cover the costs of investigation, prosecution, and victim compensation.
“I signed an anti-spread bill a few years back, and while that was a significant law, the one I’m signing today is the toughest in the nation,” DeSantis stated during an interview.
He elaborated on the dangers of swatting, where officers respond to what they believe is an active threat, often leaving residents confused and in dangerous situations. “Officers think it’s a legitimate call, so they act accordingly, and residents are left wondering what’s happening, which can escalate into a deadly scenario,” he remarked.
While focusing on conservative targets, DeSantis emphasized that this bill aims to safeguard all Floridians. “We’ve noted a trend of targeting conservative media figures nationwide, including in Florida, and this kind of behavior won’t be tolerated,” he mentioned.
