Governor DeSantis Defends Removal of Rainbow Crosswalk in Orlando

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis has stood firm on his decision to eliminate a rainbow-colored crosswalk situated outside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. This move has sparked significant backlash from local Democrats and LGBTQ activists.

This crosswalk had been a notable feature by the nightclub, which was the site of a tragic 2016 terrorist attack that claimed 49 lives. Recently, the Florida Department of Transportation painted over it as part of a broader initiative aimed at “ensuring the safety and consistency of public roadways and transportation systems.”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy explained that this action is part of the SAFE ROADS initiative. Earlier this year, he circulated a memo focused on the importance of reducing distractions and unnecessary markings on roads.

“This is about safety and operation at intersections, keeping the right-of-way free from distractions,” Duffy wrote. “Far too many Americans die each year to traffic fatalities. Our focus must remain on making roads safer and easier to navigate, not using them for political statements.”

Yet, this decision has not gone unnoticed. Local Democrats and LGBTQ activists have been vocal online, expressing their dismay at the removal.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer criticized the action, deeming it a “callous” and “cruel political act.” He emphasized the crosswalk’s role in enhancing pedestrian safety and serving as a testament to Orlando’s commitment to remembering the victims of the attack.

“This crosswalk not only enhanced safety and visibility for the large number of pedestrians visiting the memorial, it also served as a visual reminder of Orlando’s commitment to honor the 49 lives taken,” Dyer stated.

Rand Hoch, who founded the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, characterized the initiative as a clear anti-LGBTQ move by both federal and state governments. He labeled it as an attempt to pressure localities by threatening to withhold funding if they didn’t comply.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous,” he added.

In light of the criticism, DeSantis reinforced his stance, stating that Florida “will not allow our state roads to be commandeered for political purposes.”

His remarks came as a response to Florida Democrat State Senator Carlos Smith, who referred to the state’s actions as “an act of vandalism.” Smith suggested that Orlando should consider legal action against the state for the unapproved removal of the crosswalk.

Following the painting over of the crosswalk, some local activists attempted to restore it using chalk, though a rainstorm washed away their efforts later that day.
