DeSantis supporters more likely to back Trump as second choice in New Hampshire: Poll

Supporters of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are more likely to support former President Trump over former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley as his second choice in New Hampshire, according to a new poll.

poll from CNN/University of New Hampshire (UNH) was released hours before DeSantis announced Sunday that he was withdrawing from the 2024 presidential primary and endorsing Trump. The poll found that 62% of likely New Hampshire Republican voters who chose DeSantis as their first choice chose Trump as their second choice, and 30% chose Haley as their alternative. did.

The poll comes days before New Hampshire voters cast their ballots in Tuesday's Republican primary, with Haley hoping to pull off an upset in the Granite State. Haley has gained an edge over Trump in the state in recent weeks and now trails the former president by 11 points, according to a CNN poll.

A CNN poll showed Mr. Trump's approval rating at 50%, while Ms. Haley's approval rating was at 39%, with Ms. DeSantis far behind.

The poll's results suggest that DeSantis' supporters in New Hampshire could boost support for Trump in the state. However, the poll also found that only 6% of voters chose the Florida governor as their first choice.

Mr. DeSantis supported Mr. Trump's nomination in a video message Sunday.

“I have signed a pledge to support the Republican candidate and I intend to honor that pledge. Because we can't go back to the old packaged Republican guard,'' DeSantis said.

The CNN/UNH poll was conducted between January 16 and January 19 among 2,348 respondents, including 1,242 likely 2024 Republican primary voters. Among likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters, the poll has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
