Week One of College Football Season is Here
We’ve finally arrived at the first week of the college football season. Sure, Week 0 had its significance, but let’s give a nod to Iowa and Kansas—there’s a certain pride in knowing who dominates the Big 12. The real excitement kicks off this weekend.
College football is back, and it feels pretty amazing. As the College GameDay crew heads to Columbus for the Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes matchup, we can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia; this week marks Lee Corso’s final show.
I mean, can you really picture college football without Corso? His insights and personality have been part of so many unforgettable moments over the years. It’s hard to imagine it won’t be quite the same. We’ll definitely miss him, but there’s some comfort in knowing he has a great setup to continue enjoying the games he loves, thanks to the fantastic folks at Samsung.
The legendary Desmond Howard shared a moment with Coach Corso this season that really hit home for me. It’s bittersweet, in a way. Desmond talked with me about Coach Corso’s retirement, highlighting how much influence he’s had not just on individuals, but on college football as a whole. And honestly, it’s tough to argue against that.
Coach Corso has truly left a massive imprint on everyone around him. And speaking of the sport itself, kicking off from Monday, August 25th to Sunday, September 7th, fans can really dive into the action. There’s a promo code available at checkout that seemed interesting, perhaps for some new tech.
Desmond is definitely optimistic about this season. He has some faith in my Sun Devils and my Florida Gators, although those expectations for the latter kind of lie on shaky ground. A lot has to do with the level of competition in the SEC, which is notoriously intense.
However, considering Desmond’s background and success in the Big Ten, I was curious about his take on that conference as it continues to assert itself within the college football hierarchy. It’s worth noting that the Buckeyes recently clinched a championship title, overcoming Michigan along the way—even if they lost to them once in the process.
Could we possibly see a third consecutive national championship for a Big Ten school? Maybe it’ll be Penn State this time? If that happens, it’d be pretty interesting, right? Would that make the Big Ten the leading conference in college football?
Desmond isn’t ready to go that far—after all, making predictions in August can be a bit risky. Still, he did hint that the Big Ten is genuinely a place to watch this season.
And soon enough, we’ll find out just what this season has in store for us.
