Netflix Plans for MLB Opening Day: A Grand Entrance
Exciting news is surfacing about Netflix’s approach to MLB Opening Day, which looks to be quite the event for their baseball debut.
Yes, quite literally.
Reports indicate that Netflix is set to put 73 red kayaks in McCovey Cove, positioned right behind the right field wall at Oracle Park. This is all in preparation for the highly anticipated game between the Giants and Yankees on March 25, kicking off the MLB regular season.
This initiative, first noted by local sources, pays tribute to the iconic single-season home run record held by the legendary Giants player Barry Bonds. Interestingly, nine of Bonds’ 73 home runs that season splashed into San Francisco Bay, contributing to the Giants’ home run tally during his tenure at the stadium—that’s quite a record considering he played for just seven seasons here.
Though Bonds tends to stay out of the spotlight, there are whispers that Netflix may be keen on having him join the broadcast as an analyst. His name wasn’t included in the seven-member team announced recently, but they did mention an eighth “special guest” yet to be revealed.
Matt Vasgersian, who now serves as the voice for Sunday morning games on Peacock/NBC, will take on the play-by-play role alongside former star players representing both teams. Hunter Pence will share his insights for the Giants, while CC Sabathia will represent the Yankees. Pence, a beloved figure in the Giants’ World Series history, is still an active commentator in the area, whereas Sabathia has deep roots in the nearby Vallejo.
The broadcast features a live set hosted by Elle Duncan, with commentary from Hall of Famer Albert Pujols, and former baseball stars like Anthony Rizzo. Lauren Shehadi will cover the field, while comedian Bert Kreischer reprises his role from Netflix’s NFL broadcasts.
Netflix ventured into live sports with its first game aired on Christmas Day 2024, marking a significant move into mainstream American sports. With its global viewers, there’s speculation that Netflix might also become a key player in showcasing the NFL’s international games.
Following a pattern set by soccer, Netflix’s baseball strategy seems focused on major marquee events.
Apart from Opening Night, they have secured the rights to the Home Run Derby and one additional “special event” each season until 2028, starting this year with the Field of Dreams game on August 13.
It also looks like Netflix is aiming to enhance the fan experience beyond conventional broadcasts.
Reportedly, they plan to feature a “pop-up bullpen” where fans can showcase their skills, with the kayaks adorned in Netflix’s signature red color available for use.
McCovey Cove, a famed spot in the sport, is set to play a significant role.
However, whether this will lead to a successful outing for Netflix remains to be seen. The water sits about 20 feet behind a 25-foot tall brick wall, and San Francisco’s typical ocean layer could make things tricky.
The entire projected 26-man roster of the Giants is anticipated to create three splash hits, but so far, no Yankees player has achieved that. Aaron Judge, being their strongest hitter, might seem like a prime candidate, yet only one right-handed batter has managed to pop one out thus far.
