Oswald Cabrera’s Recovery Journey Begins
Oswald Cabrera is on the road to recovery following his ankle surgery, but it seems unlikely he’ll be back on the field this season.
The Yankees’ cherished utility player had a successful operation on Thursday after suffering a serious injury during a play on Monday night in Seattle.
Manager Aaron Boone shared on Friday that the surgery had uncovered several ligament injuries.
“You’d probably say it’s unlikely he’ll return this season,” Boone commented before the Yankees kicked off their series at Yankee Stadium.
On Thursday, Cabrera took to social media to announce that he’d undergone surgery. He described Monday as a “sad night” and expressed that he had many “negative thoughts” following the injury. Nevertheless, the overwhelming support he received from family, friends, fans, and teammates brought a “big smile” to his face.
“My return to the field begins today,” Cabrera mentioned in his post. “Because of you, I feel more motivated than ever. With all this positive energy you give me, I say I’ll make a comeback.”
Several Yankees players, including Aaron Judge, Anthony Volpe, and Boone, visited Cabrera in the hospital late Monday night before he was discharged.
His teammates were understandably upset when he was taken off the field in an ambulance, but they felt reassured upon seeing him smiling in the hotel lobby the next morning.
Cabrera reflected on his experience, saying, “Maybe it’s only after facing something challenging like this that you realize the importance of support. Today, with a successful operation and the help of my amazing medical team, along with God, my parents, my fiancé, and everyone who cares about me, I’m truly grateful for all the love.”
