Details on Iran's focus: US air base Al Udeid

On Monday, Iran carried out an attack on a U.S. Air Force Base located in Qatar, just as the world anticipated a response following a U.S. airstrike on three Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend.

This incident represents another spike in the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, coinciding with an Israeli airstrike on Iran earlier on June 13.

Here’s a brief overview of Qatar’s targeted Air Base:

What’s the size of the base?

Al Udeid Air Force Base stands as the largest U.S. military installation in the region, typically housing between 5,000 to 10,000 personnel, according to defense officials.

Why is it significant?

This base is strategically important for U.S. military operations across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. It hosts the U.S. Central Command (CentCom) and other important military commands. The Department of Defense describes it as a key staging area for most air operations in the fight against ISIS.

Since 2003, Qatar has invested over $8 billion in developing these air force facilities.

Were there any reported injuries?

The Pentagon indicated that the assault was executed using short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles, with no casualties reported at this time.

“We confirm that Al Udeid Air Base was struck by ballistic missiles from Iran today. Currently, there are no reports of U.S. casualties. We are monitoring the situation closely and will share further details as they come,” a spokesperson stated.

A representative from Qatar’s foreign ministry noted that their air defense systems had successfully intercepted some of the missiles launched by Iran, stating that Qatar “reserves the right to respond proportionately in accordance with international law” to this blatant act.

Did Iran give any advance warning?

According to reports from Iranian officials, Iran had provided advance notifications about the attack to limit casualties. They emphasized that while they needed to retaliate following the U.S. strike, there were also efforts to find a diplomatic avenue for resolution.

Due to the rising tensions, Qatar temporarily closed its airspace on Monday in light of Iran’s threats. The Qatari Foreign Ministry described this measure as one of caution, responding to regional developments.

Earlier that day, the U.S. embassy in Qatar advised American citizens to “evacuate until further notice,” labeling this alert as a precautionary action.

When did Trump visit?

Trump visited Al Udeid Air Force Base during his Middle East tour last month, marking the first visit by a sitting president since 2003. He addressed over 1,000 military members stationed at the base during his visit.
