Neighbors and officials noted that Tyler Robinson, a bright young man, was on his way to church before he received an honorary scholarship to a university.
At 22, Robinson was described as a “very nice” member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, attending services regularly with his family during his childhood, according to a neighbor from the far southwest corner of Utah.
“I knew his mom, and it was all about the church and school,” shared Christine Sheerman, reflecting on the suspect’s mother, Amber.
“He was a good kid,” she added, noting that Robinson excelled academically. “I heard he had done well on his exams,” she mentioned, along with the fact that he was commuting daily from Pineview High School.
“I mean, he was sharp. I honestly couldn’t believe he would be involved in something like this,” she said, still in shock.
Robinson had been accepted at Utah State University and was awarded its prestigious presidential scholarship, the highest academic accolade offered there, as Amanda Delito from the university pointed out.
However, it turned out he only attended one semester at Logan School in the fall of 2021, after which he took a leave of absence for reasons unknown.
Recently, he had enrolled as a junior at Dixie Institute of Technology in St. George, Utah, enrolled in an electrical apprenticeship program, university officials said.
He was living in Washington County when authorities apprehended him after his father urged him to surrender.
Update on the shooting involving activist Charlie Kirk
Robinson’s father recognized his son in grainy FBI images circulated online, which prompted an urgent conversation.
When confronted, Robinson admitted to firing a shot at Kirk while he was speaking at Utah Valley University. Reports indicate that when his father asked him to cooperate, Robinson mentioned he would rather end his life.
The father encouraged Robinson to seek guidance from a youth minister. Following that discussion, the minister contacted law enforcement, which ultimately led to Robinson’s arrest early Friday.
In the lead-up to the incident, he had shown an increasing interest in political issues, expressing strong negative feelings towards activists who, he believed, were “full of hate,” according to authorities.
Before the event, he had been vocal about his disdain for Kirk’s perspectives during a family dinner, which later caught the attention of officials.
A family friend shared troubling accounts of his mindset, which has raised concerns among those who knew him.
According to Scheiermann, who reflected on the changes in Robinson, several factors contributed to his drastic transformation from a well-liked youth to a suspected assailant.
“There are three main influences: negative peer pressure, the impact of social media, and mental health issues. All of these have contributed to the larger problem we’re seeing today,” she explained.
Meanwhile, the community is rallying to support the families affected.
As per an affidavit released recently, Robinson is expected to face charges, including aggravated murder, among several others.
