A Detroit-area teacher claims he was fired from his job after the school received complaints about his moonlighting as a rapper, local media reported.
Domonique Brown is a former U.S. history teacher at Taylor Preparatory High School in Taylor, Michigan. told FOX2 Last week, parents anonymously complained to the school about her sideline rap career last October, leading to months of interviews and eventual expulsion.
Active under the stage name “Drippin Honey”. Brown’s YouTube channel, She has about 3,500 subscribers where she posts videos of her singing.
She took to her platform following the dismissal allegations and posted the following: Music video “Drippin 101” There, she can be seen dancing and singing with some of her former students. The video has around 69,000 views on her YouTube and includes an account of what happened after the anonymous complaint was filed.
Brown said that after the anonymous complaint, she had five months of meetings with the school, where she “defended herself.”[ed]her “involvement in the music industry.”
“What bothers me most about this situation is that it doesn’t take into account the influence and impact I have had on the lives of my students. I don’t want my outside life to interfere with my ability to fulfill my responsibilities as a teacher. should not be grounds for dismissal,” she said in a statement.
“My dedication, professionalism, and passion for teaching have always remained steadfast, regardless of my personal pursuits. When I was hired as a teacher, my involvement in the music industry as a rapper did not hinder my candidacy. It’s worth noting that there wasn’t.”
She has been teaching for seven years and says she has collected more than 200 signatures from students and parents supporting her.
“The first person I met with was the dean and the principal. They just said, ‘A parent saw your social media and said, ‘You’re a bad influence because you’re a rapper.’ ” Brown told FOX 2.
FOX 2 reported that the parents continued to complain, but when they asked for a written grievance, they never received one.
Brown reportedly told FOX 2 that she believed she was being discriminated against, saying, “Music is part of the culture. We’re from Motown, this is what we do. So. , it’s not unheard of, it’s the culture. If you look like me, you understand it a little bit…”
Taylor Prep did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but a school spokesperson told FOX 2 it was aware of Brown’s allegations.
Brown said she has hired a lawyer and plans to take legal action against the school.
