Detroit Families Impacted by Crime Get Christmas Gifts from Police

The Detroit Police Department on Friday provided Christmas cheer to 25 local families who have been victims of crime or have special needs.

As part of the annual Santa Sergeant Giveaway, police officers visited several deserving homes and daycares with gifts, WXYZ reported:

India Williams, a 17-year-old girl who was paralyzed by a stray bullet while playing outside 10 years ago, is one of the 2024 recipients.

“She was shot while playing outside on Sunday. On September 14, 2014, a stray bullet hit her and put her in this (wheel) chair,” said her mother, Klinckte. Barnett Davis told the magazine. “I cry in my room. I don't let them see me like this. It's hard because my daughter was walking one day and now she's not walking. .”

The family's suffering worsened when Barnett-Davis lost her husband in an accident in 2023.

But Detroit police never stopped monitoring them, she said.

“They've always been in my corner since 2014.”

India, who received the donated gift, said, “I'm happy to receive the gift.''

“They have blessed so many families and I am so grateful that they are doing this,” her mother added.

This gift was made possible after the police department raised $20,000.

Police officer Dan Robinson Sr. told a local broadcaster: “There's nothing like seeing someone really happy and knowing you're doing something to help someone. , nothing makes you feel better as a police officer.”
