Detroit officer, 2 suspects injured on active shooting call

A Detroit police officer was shot and wounded and two suspects were found with gunshot wounds during a shooting inside a residence late Thursday, police said.

Detroit Police Chief James White said the injured officer and the two suspects are expected to make a full recovery. He did not specify the conditions as the police officers and suspects were all hospitalized.

White said officers responded to a “suppressed” ShotSpotter alert that detected gunshots inside a residence on the city's west side after 11 p.m. Thursday. When officers arrived, they said they heard gunshots inside the home.

A Detroit Police Department officer and two suspects were reported injured after authorities responded to a report of shots fired inside a residence.

Officers entered the home and went to the second floor, White said. The first two officers to go up the stairs encountered the suspect and fired shots, and one officer was struck by gunfire.

The second officer returned fire, pulling his partner out of the line of fire, and the second officer also returned fire, the chief said.

White said two suspects were found with gunshot wounds inside the home, but he did not know if they were injured by police or by someone inside the home. It was not immediately clear whether he had done so.

“No matter how you look at it, the police officers who rushed into a gunfight situation were heroic,” the police chief said. “They were apparently interfering with either a robbery-murder or a murder.”
