Detroit police officer shows up to virtual court hearing without pants

Officer Appears in Virtual Court Without Pants

A Detroit police officer, Matthew Jackson, attended a virtual court session this past Monday while notably wearing his police uniform shirt and badge but was, quite unexpectedly, without pants. This unusual sight left the presiding judge, Sean Perkins, temporarily at a loss for words.

The hearing was related to a case involving disorderly conduct and drag racing, a reckless type of driving where cars race over short distances. A video from the 36th District Court quickly gained traction on social media after the incident.

In the video, Jackson can be seen perched in front of his camera wearing his police attire—specifically, a button-up shirt and badge—though it looks like he might have been wearing dark boxer shorts beneath. The moment became comedic when the judge, surprised by the sight, questioned him, “Officer, are you wearing pants?”

Jackson’s direct response was, “No, sir,” as he hurriedly adjusted his phone to hide his lower body.

Despite his clear surprise, Judge Perkins tried to proceed with the case without making further comments about Jackson’s lack of pants. The reasons behind his choice of attire during this serious legal matter remain unclear.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison addressed the unusual incident in a statement, asserting that such behavior does not reflect the expected professionalism of the police department. He expressed remorse on behalf of the department, highlighting the need for officers to present themselves properly in court.

Bettison emphasized, “The actions of the staff involved are not representative of the professionalism of this department and will be dealt with appropriately to maintain public trust.” He also extended apologies to the judge, court staff, and anyone else who might have been impacted by the incident.
