Detroit Residents Share Views on Biden and Trump
This month, Detroit voters shared their thoughts on which leader—Donald Trump or Joe Biden—has offered them a better quality of life. The discussion was particularly relevant given the city’s history of strong support for Biden and Kamala Harris in both the 2020 and 2024 elections.
In downtown Detroit, a graphic design intern named Jayla reflected on her experience under Biden’s administration. She mentioned that her life had improved since he took office, especially considering he narrowly won Michigan in 2020.
“Biden’s medical plan has worked better for me as a type 1 diabetic,” Jayla noted, though she hesitated a bit, adding, “But, you know, as a college student, it’s a mix of challenges.”
On the other hand, Ronald, a voter from Livonia, expressed his preference for Trump. “We need to consider the economy,” he stated. “Being left behind is a real concern for many of us.”
Joseph, a quality control expert born in Detroit, leaned towards Biden, emphasizing the feeling that economic pressures are complex. “People are trying to normalize the stress we’re feeling, but it’s so tied to our society’s current situation,” he said.
Mary, an educator walking with Joseph, chimed in that her life could improve under Biden, especially with student loans getting more manageable. “I appreciate the help on loans, definitely a blessing for me financially,” she exclaimed.
Concerns about healthcare also surfaced. Josie, a social worker in Detroit, voiced worries regarding Trump’s recent changes to Medicaid, hinting at how they could adversely affect her community. “Biden’s efforts have been better in handling cuts that hit many hard,” she stated.
Even PJ, in clothing manufacturing, sided with Biden, although he claimed he wasn’t a huge fan of either candidate. “At the end of the day, it feels like many politicians are out of touch with us,” he remarked, reflecting a bit of disillusionment.
Interestingly, Trump has showed improvement in Wayne County’s support compared to four years ago, gaining some ground even though he still faced a significant defeat. He managed to close the gap from a 38-point loss in 2020 to around 29 points in 2024.
