How they decide to draft the quarterback position could be the difference between winning and not winning. Fantasy Football Win the championship and go home with nothing.
In superflex leagues, virtually every quarterback has great value.
A quick look at the Superflex ADP also gives us a third player to pick to get through the bye week.
But in a league with just one starting quarterback, you have to understand that trying to push value onto the position so high can lead to failure.
While everyone else is chasing the “Konami cheat codes” mobile quarterback, you need to really evaluate the tier and decide if it’s really right for you based on the results of your first few selections.
Are you convinced Josh Allen is worth an early third round pick after losing Stefon Diggs?
In a new system without Jason Kelce and with Saquon Barkley expected to thrive near the goal line, what about Jalen Hurts?
Suddenly, question marks were littered around the top quarterbacks.
They could target a more mobile player like Anthony Richardson or Kyler Murray, but there are obvious health questions.
And from there it leads to guys like CJ Stroud, Jordan Love and Joe Burrow.
These are all solid options and reasonable costs to consider, but statistically speaking, do they actually give you an edge over your competitors?
Last season, Dak Prescott, with a current ADP of 75 (early seventh round in 12-team leagues), finished third overall in fantasy points, more than 20 points ahead of Stroud, Love and even Patrick Mahomes.
Jared Goff finished seventh in fantasy points with a 106 ADP, ahead of Mahomes and Stroud.
Granted, those are last season’s totals and this season’s ADP, but Goff was an afterthought in last year’s draft, and players like Brock Purdy, Tua Tagovailoa and Baker Mayfield were all top-10 picks at the position.
The point here is to figure out what is more important in the draft.
If people are drafting high-end quarterbacks, they can either join that contention or get a high-end talent like Josh Jacobs, Michael Pittman or DK Metcalf instead.
Do you bet on the NFL?
Stocking up on running backs and wide receivers or acquiring an elite tight end might be a better approach, especially with veteran quarterbacks like Goff and Matthew Stafford seeing late-game action.
I’m not saying either is a better quarterback than Mahomes, but would Mahomes and Keion Coleman or Goff and Mike Evans be a better fit for your team?
These decisions can be made before the draft, but the answers to the questions may become clearer after you sit in on a strategy meeting and see what everyone else is doing.
Then they go the cheaper route of Stafford or Goff and draft Will Revis late if they want a quarterback upside.
The way Tennessee performs, he could be a top-10 prospect by the end of the year.
