Devils Part Ways with General Manager Tom Fitzgerald

The New Jersey Devils have announced a significant change as they head toward the end of a challenging season. On Monday, the team revealed they are parting ways with general manager Tom Fitzgerald, who had one year remaining on his contract.

Fitzgerald took over as the interim general manager back in January 2020. As of Monday, the Devils found themselves in 13th place in the Eastern Conference, holding a record of 40 wins, 34 losses, and 3 overtime losses. It’s been a tough road for the franchise this season.

David Blitzer, the managing partner, stated, “Tom and I had a thoughtful conversation today and agreed that it was time to move in a new direction.” He also commended Fitzgerald’s contributions but acknowledged the fans’ frustrations, mentioning how important it is to prepare for the upcoming offseason. The team aims to improve and hopes to make a strong push for the Stanley Cup in the future.

During Fitzgerald’s six-season tenure, the Devils only made the playoffs twice. Most recently, they advanced to the second round of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, only to be knocked out by the Hurricanes after defeating the Rangers in the first round. Last season, they faced elimination again by the same team in the first round.

Fitzgerald expressed gratitude towards the Devils organization, stating, “I am deeply grateful to David, Josh Harris, and the entire New Jersey Devils organization for being a part of my life over the past 10 years. The Devils are fortunate to have a core of great players, vocal and passionate fans, but most importantly, great people who have worked with me toward a common goal.”

Reflecting on his time, he added, “I’ve always said New Jersey is a hidden gem, and I’m proud of the hard work we’ve put in to raise its standards and make it a destination.” Fitzgerald seems hopeful about the next chapter in his career.
