Devin Singletary ‘sticking with’ No. 26 in Giants’ backfield

Devin Singletary will be wearing Saquon Barkley’s old jersey, but he won’t be trying to wear his own shoes.

Shortly after Barkley left for the Eagles this week, the Giants signed Singletary to become their new running back.

“Saquon is great, we all know that,” Singletary said Thursday. “I’m really happy to be a Giant. I’m looking forward to a great opportunity here and I’m ready to get to work. At the end of the day, I’m just me and I want to help the team in any way I can.” It means we’re ready to help win.”

Singletary wore No. 26 for four seasons with the Bills and one season with the Texans. Barkley just surrendered the Giants’ best-selling active player jersey.

“I’ve worn No. 26 since I came into the league,” Singletary said. “That’s the number I’m fixated on.”

Singletary signed a three-year, $16.5 million contract that includes $9.5 million guaranteed, but it pales in comparison to the deal the Eagles gave Barkley (three years, $37.5 million, $26 million guaranteed).

This is more in line with how general manager Joe Schon, who drafted Singletary as the Bills’ assistant general manager in 2019, envisions paying for the running back on the position value scale. ing.

Barkley appeared in 74 games with the Giants, averaging 98.8 yards from scrimmage and 47 touchdowns per game. Singletary averaged 66.8 points and 24 touchdowns in 78 career games.

“Smart, reliable, great energy every day, that’s who I am,” Singletary said.

The Texans have expressed interest in re-signing Singletary, who became the starter in place of Dameon Pierce last season and rushed for a career-high 898 yards.

After Singletary went to the Giants, the Texans traded him for Joe Mixon, who was almost released to the Bengals.

“More than anything, I wanted to be in a great situation,” Singletary said. “When I found out it was the Giants, I was so excited.”

League sources say the Giants are looking to add another running back, but are aiming for a position near the league minimum.

Running backs Gary Brightwell, Ja’Sean Corbin, Eric Gray and Deon Jackson remain on the roster.

“Whatever it takes to help the team win, that’s why I’m here,” Singletary said. “If it’s a leadback, if it’s a leadback. [part of a committee], whatever it is. ”
