Yankees Suffer Another Tough Loss in Arlington
ARLINGTON, Texas – It seemed like the Yankees’ bullpen was on the right track during Monday night’s game, with the first three relievers—Luke Weaver, Kamilo Doval, and David Bedner—delivering flawless innings that kept the team in the lead. But then, Devin Williams stumbled, and everything changed.
In a dramatic turn, Williams allowed a game-altering homer to Joc Pederson in the ninth inning. Things went from bad to worse when Jake Bird gave up a walk-off home run to Josh Jung in the 10th, marking the Yankees’ fourth straight defeat.
Bird had retired the first two batters in the bottom of the tenth, but then opted to intentionally walk Wyatt Langford, which backfired as Jung launched a three-run shot that sealed the game for the Rangers.
The Yankees had a chance, with a runner at third in the top of the tenth, but Austin Wells grounded into a double play, leaving them empty-handed.
Following a rough outing in Miami, where their bullpen struggled badly, the Yankees had hoped for a better showing after a weekend sweep. But the result felt all too familiar.
Williams has been inconsistent lately, allowing at least one run in five of his last seven appearances since the All-Star break. He had shown promise earlier in the season, but now those early struggles seem to have returned.
With Bednar and Doval both being former closers in the bullpen, the question now is how manager Aaron Boone will manage the late innings moving forward.
After a challenging weekend, the Yankees are now looking at a tighter playoff race. The Rangers (59-55) entered the night as the last team in the AL Wild Card spot, putting pressure on the Yankees (60-53), who are now just one game ahead.
Max Fried’s performance wasn’t what the Yankees needed, as he managed only five innings while giving up four runs on 10 hits and three walks, raising his ERA to 5.81 in his last six starts.
In the fourth inning, Giancarlo Stanton hit his 10th home run of the season, giving the Yankees a brief lead at 5-4. But this only complicated matters further, as Aaron Judge is expected to return from the injured list. However, he’ll likely just be limited to DH until he’s fully ready to throw.
Paul Goldschmidt provided a spark in the first inning, hitting a leadoff home run against pitcher Patrick Corbin, marking his first home run since June 19th after a long dry spell.
Though the Yankees managed to load the bases more than once, they failed to capitalize in critical moments, leaving plenty of scoring opportunities on the table.
In a quick turn of events, the Rangers responded, scoring four runs in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. A failed pick-off attempt made matters worse, allowing the go-ahead run to score and giving the Rangers a 4-3 lead.
Fried seemed to be struggling, issuing a walk and allowing consecutive singles, but he managed to escape some tense situations thanks to a key play by Anthony Volpe.
