49ers Showcase Young Talent in Preseason Opener Against Titans

The San Francisco 49ers kicked off their preseason against the Tennessee Titans with a keen eye on identifying young players who might step into pivotal roles. And, well, De’Zhaun Stribling and Jaden Dugger didn’t waste much time making a statement.

Stribling, who stirred some controversy as the 49ers’ second-round pick, carried the momentum from a strong training camp into the game. He started as a rookie receiver and quickly became a favorite target for quarterback Curtis Rourke, catching seven passes for 62 yards by early in the second quarter.

His standout play was a 32-yard reception down the right sideline, but honestly, his 11-yard catch near the goal line might have been even more impressive. It was a tightrope act to maintain his position in bounds, and it withstood Tennessee’s challenge.

This performance has further solidified Stribling’s case throughout camp. He has displayed consistency with Brock Purdy, especially on deep throws. After the game, coach David Lombardi hinted that the 49ers might be ready to give him more first-team opportunities based on his experience.

This development seems crucial, especially with the receiving corps facing various uncertainties. Ricky Pearsall is out for the season after knee surgery, Mike Evans is battling a quad issue, and Christian Kirk is dealing with a calf problem.

The 49ers took a chance on Stribling, picking him 33rd overall, banking on his 4.36 speed and knack for creating big plays. So far, it’s looking like a gamble that might pay off.

Meanwhile, Jaden Dugger’s entry wasn’t exactly highly anticipated. Yet, he made quite an impression too.

Starting as a fifth-round linebacker, he showed flashes of brilliance during camp, aligning as a middle linebacker, weakside linebacker, and even in the team’s hybrid “fever” position. His remarkable wingspan became apparent during his very first tackle in the NFL, allowing him to make plays from distances most off-ball linebackers can’t reach. It kind of explains why players with Dugger’s size often slip through the cracks, but the 49ers seem intrigued by his potential in Raheem Morris’ adaptable defense.

Dugger was picked 154th overall after a standout college season, where he racked up 125 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and four sacks at Louisiana.

Of course, it’s a little premature to declare the success of this draft class after just one exhibition game. Still, in these early days of August football, Stribling and Dugger are making a solid case for their legitimacy on the roster.
