Laken Riley, a bill that would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), led by Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, to bring to DHS any illegal alien charged, arrested, or convicted of crimes such as theft, theft, or robbery. They are reportedly trying to repeal the law. Or get detained for shoplifting.
News reporter Pablo Manriquez I wrote In a post to X, a “DHS source” said the Laken-Riley Act is estimated to cost between $20 billion and $30 billion.
Manriquez added that DHS sources cited “a figure of $7 billion for beds alone, before the cost of the local police mandate.”
Manriquez's post was posted in response to an article shared by Axios political reporter Steph Kite. This is what the Axios article said: revealed “Federal immigration authorities” had warned that about 60,000 people could be detained and that “billions of dollars and thousands more detention beds” could be needed.
As Breitbart News' John Binder previously reported, the House passed the Laken-Reilly Act in early January despite opposition from 159 Democrats.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) is one of the Democrats who has supported the Laken-Reilly Act.
“ICE has reported that there are tens of thousands of immigrants with criminal records, including murder and sexual assault,” Fetterman said. I wrote In the post of X.
Fetterman added that a total of 425,000 immigrants “have criminal records and should be deported.”
“I support secure borders. I support legal pathways for Dreamers. I support the Laken Riley Act,” Fetterman continued.
The Laken Riley Act is named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered in Athens, Georgia on February 22, 2024 by Jose Antonio Ybarra, an illegal alien released into the United States.
In November 2024, Ybarra was found guilty on all charges in Riley's murder.
Breitbart News' Bradley Jay previously reported that 33 Senate Democrats voted with Republicans to “clear important procedural hurdles in the Laken-Riley Act.”
