DHS Chief Mayorkas Admits Migrants Often ‘Try to Game’ Entry into U.S.

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has acknowledged that migrants arriving at the southern border often “try to exploit” the country’s asylum system to be released into the United States.

Mayorkas acknowledged this in an interview with CBS News, which is significant because Biden and Mayorkas have long sought to downplay the impact that a massive influx of illegal immigrants into the United States has on national security, the economy and society.

CBS News Reports:

In an interview with CBS News, the Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said some migrants at the US-Mexico border are trying to “abuse” the US asylum system. That echoes comments frequently made by Republicans but rarely expressed by Biden administration officials. [Emphasis added]

“The reality is that there are people who will try to game the system,” Mayorkas told CBS News. It happened in El Paso last Thursday. “This isn’t the case with everyone we encounter, but there are elements of it and we’re responding accordingly.” [Emphasis added]

Mayorkas made the comments in response to a question about concerns some Americans have expressed about the situation at the southern border. U.S. authorities have reported record levels of immigration arrests over the past three years, and immigration has become one of President Biden’s least popular issues and a top concern for voters heading into the November presidential election. Despite these admissions, the Biden administration’s Department of Homeland Security continues to release tens of thousands of migrants every few weeks into the U.S. interior, particularly through the parole pipeline, which has welcomed more than 1 million migrants into U.S. communities since January 2023.

Over a roughly three-year period, the Department of Homeland Security allowed a total of about 6.2 million migrants into the U.S. through an extensive catch-and-release network on the southern border, according to a January report from the Congressional Budget Office.

At the same time, it has been reported that the Department of Homeland Security will begin issuing photo IDs to migrants released onto U.S. soil starting this summer, and encounters with migrants under the Biden administration are likely to become more frequent.
