DHS Extends ‘Temporary’ Amnesty to Nearly 10K Burmese Nationals in U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under President Joe Biden has extended and redesignated a temporary amnesty program for approximately 10,000 Burmese citizens living in the United States, ensuring that they are not subject to deportation and have American jobs. I was assured that I would get the job.

On Friday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 9,600 Burmese nationals in the United States who are subject to deportation.

Burmese nationals with TPS can remain in the U.S. and hold U.S. jobs until November 2025, as long as they claim they were in Burma as of March 21, 2024.

Additionally, Mayorkas announced so-called “Special Student Relief” for Burmese nationals in the United States on F-1 student visas. This allows them to “apply for employment authorization and work more hours while school is closed,” reducing their course load while continuing to maintain F-1 status throughout the TPS designated period. ”

TPS was first created under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) of 1990 to prevent federal immigration officials from deporting people from countries designated as experiencing famine, war, or natural disaster. .

Since the Clinton administration, TPS has transformed into a de facto amnesty program through Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Trump, and now the Biden administration is continually updating the program for different countries.

As Breitbart News noted, Biden significantly expanded TPS to keep more than 1 million foreign nationals in the United States who would otherwise be subject to deportation. The Biden administration’s strategy has long been to rapidly increase the foreign-born population.
