DHS Holds Newsom Responsible After Illegal Immigrant is Charged with Killing Three Americans

DHS Comments on Sanctuary Policies After Fatal Crash Involving Undocumented Driver

A Department of Homeland Security official has criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for his ongoing support of sanctuary policies. This follows an incident involving an undocumented immigrant, who received a driver’s license in California, and was accused of causing the deaths of three Americans this month.

According to reports, Harjinder Singh, an undocumented individual from India, was driving a semi-truck in St. Lucie County, Florida when he was arrested and charged with three counts of vehicular homicide.

Footage of the crash shows Singh making a U-turn after a vehicle, containing three passengers, collided with his truck and became unresponsive.

In California, the sanctuary laws that allowed Singh to acquire a commercial driver’s license were passed in 2013 and were expanded by Newsom in 2022, despite his undocumented status.

Since 2015, California has issued over 1 million driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, according to the same reports.

DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin has accused Newsom of enabling these licenses, which she claims led to the tragic deaths in Florida. “Three innocent people died in Florida after Gavin Newsom’s California Department of Motor Vehicles allowed commercial driver’s licenses to be issued to undocumented immigrants. This is unacceptable,” she stated.

McLaughlin implored, “How many more innocent lives must be lost before Newsom prioritizes the safety of American citizens? We extend our condolences to the victims and their families while DHS works tirelessly to protect the public.”

In response, Newsom’s office asserted that the issuance of commercial driver’s licenses in California began under the Trump administration. However, McLaughlin pointed out that Singh’s request for work authorization was denied during that era.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents confirmed Singh’s detention as they investigate the murder charges against him.
