Mahmoud Khalil Files $20 Million Lawsuit Against Trump Administration
Mahmoud Khalil, an immigrant known for his anti-Israel stance, has initiated a $20 million lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming that he was unlawfully targeted for deportation.
Khalil has been accused of orchestrating violent protests against Israel during his time as a student at Columbia University and breaching the conditions of his immigration visa. This case has sparked a broader conflict between those opposing the extensive deportation orders issued by President Trump and his supporters.
Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin has sharply dismissed Khalil’s accusations, asserting, “Khalil’s assertion that DHS officials labeled him an anti-Semite and traumatized him and his family is simply absurd. It was, in fact, Khalil who instilled fear in Jewish students on campus.”
In a statement from the Center for Constitutional Rights, it was mentioned that Khalil plans to use any settlement to assist others facing similar situations with the Trump administration and Columbia University. He is willing to forego monetary compensation in exchange for an official apology and the dismantling of what he argues is an unconstitutional policy.
The CCR indicated that this lawsuit is merely the beginning of their battle, aiming to set the stage for a federal lawsuit based on the Federal Tort Claims Act, which permits citizens to sue the U.S. government for civil rights violations.
Khalil’s supporters argue that the government has engaged in viewpoint discrimination that violates his freedom of speech, yet also acknowledge that visa holders do not possess the same rights as American citizens.
Khalil has expressed deep personal consequences from his detention, sharing that he missed the birth of his first child while in custody. “This is the initial step toward accountability. I can’t regain those 104 days that were taken from me. The trauma, being separated from my wife, and missing the birth of my first child—it’s something I will never recover from,” he said. He further asserted that the same government that targeted him is using taxpayer money to support Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Following his release from custody, Khalil quickly returned to protesting against Israel.
