DHS Launches Holiday Initiative for Undocumented Immigrants
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has started the holiday season with what it describes as an unprecedented opportunity for undocumented immigrants to self-deport. On Monday, they announced a special program that offers enticing incentives for those residing illegally in the United States.
In a promotional campaign reminiscent of the 1990s, known as “Cyber Monday,” DHS revealed that all undocumented individuals can receive a free flight home along with a $1,000 bonus simply for leaving the country voluntarily. Additionally, those who participate might also escape civil fines linked to their status, potentially allowing for future legal entry into the U.S.
According to DHS, these appealing benefits can be accessed through the CBP Home app.
Tricia McLaughlin, an Assistant Secretary, stated that this app is offering a generous holiday gift: an opportunity for a free flight back home, a $1,000 bonus, and a potential route for legal re-entry into the States.
DHS also mentioned that during the Trump administration, around 2 million undocumented immigrants had either been deported or had chosen to leave voluntarily, describing the new initiative as “the greatest gift” for those affected.
“It’s a straightforward choice: opt for deportation with a bonus or remain here and risk arrest and deportation,” McLaughlin added. She encouraged families to consider what path would be best for them and to join the many who have already left the country. “Take the opportunity and download the CBP Home app,” she urged.
DHS characterized the CBP Home app as a quick and user-friendly process where undocumented immigrants can easily submit their information, and DHS will handle the logistics, including paying for their return travel. If the return is confirmed through the app, participants will also receive the promised $1,000 bonus.
McLaughlin pointed out that, ideally, if everything goes smoothly, people might be able to finalize their travel arrangements in just over a week. However, she warned that delays could happen due to inaccuracies in the submitted information or issues like not having valid travel documents.
In her comments, she emphasized that anyone not taking advantage of this offer would have to face arrest, deportation, and the possibility of never being able to return to the U.S.
This initiative, she stated, is part of a broader effort by the Biden administration to address illegal immigration. She credited the groundwork laid by the Trump administration with the establishment of Project Homecoming, which aimed to create a streamlined process for those wishing to return home voluntarily.
