Fort Myers Man Arrested for Mother’s Murder
A Haitian man who was previously released by the Biden administration in 2022 has been arrested again, this time on suspicion of murdering his mother. The incident took place on Friday at a gas station in Fort Myers, Florida.
Lorbert Joachim, 40, is facing charges of second-degree murder and criminal damage to property, according to records from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured Joachim smashing the windshield of his mother’s car before approaching her and violently attacking her with a hammer, leading to her death in broad daylight.
While her identity has not been disclosed, it’s known that she worked at the gas station and was a mother to two teenage daughters.
Authorities from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) helped local police in locating and arresting Joachim on Mango Street in Fort Myers.
Joachim first entered the United States in August 2022 and was released under the current administration. A federal judge had earlier issued a removal order against him, but he was granted temporary protected status, which is set to expire in 2024.
“This individual brutally attacked this woman multiple times with a hammer,” noted Lauren Biss, acting assistant secretary of Homeland Security. “He was allowed to stay in the country by the Biden administration, and their immigration policies have had dire consequences.”
Following his arrest, ICE has filed a motion to detain Joachim, and he is set to be deported regardless of the outcome of this case. Biss emphasized that this incident illustrates how ICE can work alongside local authorities to ensure public safety.
