DHS requests Governor Spanberger to deny release of illegal immigrant accused of rape

Pressure on Virginia Governor Regarding Immigrant Crime

In Northern Virginia, a significant suburb of Washington, D.C., Governor Abigail Spanberger is under scrutiny as concerns rise about immigrant-related crimes. Following a recent incident, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has urged her not to release an undocumented Guatemalan immigrant who faces serious allegations, including attempted rape.

The accused, 28-year-old Luzbin Olvando García Moran, is charged with multiple offenses, including kidnapping, assault, and attempted rape. Local reports suggest that he approached a woman waiting for a rideshare early Sunday morning, attempting to assault her. Thankfully, two bystanders intervened, though García Moran managed to escape the scene.

He was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently held without bail. The DHS has requested the Arlington County Jail to comply with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer to ensure García Moran is not released into the community. This situation is made more complex by Arlington’s local policies, which typically limit cooperation with ICE.

García Moran’s legal history dates back to 2020, with over two dozen charges, including public intoxication and assault. His previous arrests have raised questions about the effectiveness of current sanctuary policies in Arlington, especially as the area has seen an uptick in violent crimes.

Some residents, along with ICE officials, are pressing Spanberger to reconsider these policies, particularly in light of recent assaults in neighboring Fairfax County. Notable incidents there have included serious violent crimes, leading to concerns that sanctuary laws may inadvertently allow criminals to remain in the community.

Amidst growing pressure, Spanberger’s silence on possibly revoking the sanctuary policy has sparked debate. Acting Assistant Secretary of DHS, Lauren Biss, stated that the system has failed to prevent this kind of crime, emphasizing the need for local leadership to take a stand.

As the situation develops, residents and officials alike are questioning how many more similar incidents it will take before lasting changes are made. Further comments from Spanberger’s office are awaited as the matter unfolds.
