DHS responds after Walz requests federal review of enforcement in Minnesota

Concerns Over Immigration Enforcement in Minnesota

As Minnesota grapples with a significant fraud scandal tied to its Somali community, the state’s Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, McLaughlin, responded sharply to Governor Tim Walz’s request for a reassessment of immigration enforcement policies. The governor had expressed “grave concern” over a U.S. citizen’s recent arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minneapolis.

“Instead of spreading misinformation, Tim Walz ought to prioritize American safety and recognize the dedication of DHS law enforcement,” McLaughlin stated during an interview. She emphasized that U.S. citizens who engage in assault or obstruct law enforcement are indeed being arrested, highlighting an unsettling surge in hostility towards officers. In fact, assaults on law enforcement have reportedly surged by over 1,050 percent, accompanied by an astonishing 8,000 percent rise in threats against police.

Criticism of Minnesota’s Handling of Fraud

Walz’s concerns stemmed from the arrest of a woman named “Sue,” who allegedly assaulted a federal officer during an operation aimed at apprehending an Ecuadorian illegal immigrant. McLaughlin clarified, “Obstructing law enforcement isn’t a form of protest—it’s a crime.” She noted that the suspect had a prior felony assault conviction against a police officer and mentioned a mob that attempted to intercept law enforcement during the operation.

Walz had requested Homeland Security to evaluate whether federal agents were adhering to legal standards during these detentions and to confirm that citizens could witness and record law enforcement actions without fear of reprisal.

In a statement regarding Walz’s letter, McLaughlin maintained that interference with law enforcement duties may indeed lead to prosecution. “Secretary Noem has clearly stated that anyone who obstructs law enforcement will face full legal consequences,” she reiterated.

“The current situation raises serious questions about civil liberties and trust between local communities and federal agents,” Walz remarked. He conveyed that Minnesota residents cherish their civic engagement and that detaining citizens merely for exercising their rights sends a troubling message.

Addressing specific incidents, he cited another citizen, “Mubashir,” who was reportedly overpowered and detained, raising further concerns about the nature of enforcement tactics. Walz urged a reevaluation of the broader enforcement strategies employed by the federal government, indicating that Minnesotans expect better communication and respect for civil liberties.

In a late-night statement, Walz expressed frustration over what he perceived as federal attempts to incite fear among residents. “Mr. Trump seems to want a spectacle. Let’s not give in to that. Instead, prioritize safety and peace during interactions with ICE,” he advised.

Ongoing Fraud Investigations in Minnesota

This controversy unfolds against the backdrop of a large-scale fraud scheme that has plagued Minnesota since at least 2020, affecting various sectors, including childcare and COVID-19 assistance. The estimated losses have surpassed $1 billion in state and federal funds, with several Republican lawmakers holding Walz accountable for the situation. State Rep. Mark Colan remarked, “We should examine who was responsible for overseeing this process—Governor Walz.” He criticized the executive branch’s competence, suggesting that the failings might either stem from incompetence or a deliberate lack of action.

As the situation continues to evolve, the response from Walz’s office has yet to be publicly shared.
