During a segment on MSNBC’s “All In” that aired on Wednesday, Senator Robert Garcia (D-CA) asserted that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) “should not receive another penny.” He emphasized that the agency has targeted U.S. citizens, having already shown a pattern of actions against children, immigrants, and asylum seekers. “We cannot provide them with more funds for this,” he stated.
Host Chris Hayes pointed out that the hearing’s purpose included discussing the significant budget proposal for the DHS, particularly in terms of immigration enforcement. He noted that the budget could see an increase of three to five times the current funding levels, which is unprecedented. “What should Americans be aware of regarding this agency receiving such substantial funds?” he asked.
Garcia responded, “First of all, they shouldn’t get another penny. It’s essential to highlight what they’re currently doing: operating under the cover of night to apprehend individuals from our communities without even allowing them time to contact a lawyer or family. How can we consider supporting an increase in their resources? They’re already marching against U.S. citizens, targeting children, immigrants, and asylum seekers. Now they’re going after members of Congress too. This is an extremely dangerous situation.”
