Trump Administration Targets Visa Overstayers After Boulder Incident
Following the recent terrorist attacks in Boulder, Colorado, President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has initiated a crackdown on foreigners who have overstayed their visas and become illegal residents in the United States.
On Wednesday, DHS Secretary Christy Noem revealed plans to enhance immigration record audits aimed at identifying individuals who have not departed the US even after their visas expired.
It has been estimated for some time now that approximately half of the 11 to 22 million undocumented immigrants in the country entered on valid visas but chose to remain. Each year, hundreds of thousands continue to extend their stay.
This new enforcement measure follows an incident involving Mohamed Sabri Soliman, a 45-year-old illegal immigrant from Egypt, who allegedly attacked several Americans with homemade flamethrowers and Molotov cocktails during a pro-Israel demonstration in Boulder.
Soliman, currently in DHS custody, faces charges of attempted murder and federal hate crimes related to the attacks that seemed to specifically target supporters of Israel, including Jewish Americans and Holocaust survivors.
“The United States does not have space for those who sympathize with terrorism,” stated DHS Director Christa Noem. “Anyone who believes they can come to America and promote anti-Semitic violence should reconsider. You are not welcome here. We will locate you, expel you, and pursue legal action to the fullest extent.”
Soliman arrived in the United States in August 2022 through Los Angeles International Airport on a tourist visa, which expired in February 2023. Despite the expiration, he did not leave, effectively making him an illegal alien according to federal law.
Interestingly, even after his visa had lapsed, the previous administration under President Joe Biden granted him a work permit in March 2023, which also expired the following March.
Soliman had previously attempted to enter the U.S. two decades ago but was denied a visa at that time.
