Ketel Marte Stays with Diamondbacks
It appears that Ketel Marte will continue his career in Arizona, as the Diamondbacks have decided to take him off the trade market, as confirmed by Jon Heyman.
This update comes just under two weeks after Arizona’s general manager, Mike Hazen, expressed the desire to quickly resolve the situation regarding their second baseman. Back in April, the team signed Marte to a notable contract extension worth $116.5 million, which lasts through 2031, featuring a player option in the final year.
“In the end, we never got that close,” Hazen remarked to MLB.com when discussing trade possibilities for Marte. He continued, “This just reaffirms what I’ve been saying all offseason. I never really expected a trade to happen. I felt it was necessary to hear what others had to say and do my job. He’s a superstar for us—always has been and always will be.”
Interestingly, the Diamondbacks’ decision to keep Marte might influence the market for Alex Bregman. There were earlier reports indicating that Marte could have been a target for the Red Sox, had Arizona decided to sign Bregman. Despite retaining Marte, Hazen indicated on Friday that they might still pursue Bregman.
At 32, Marte had a standout season in 2025, winning his second Silver Slugger Award by tallying 28 home runs, 72 RBIs, a .283 batting average, and an .893 OPS.
With Marte’s continued presence, he will aim to help the Diamondbacks clinch a postseason spot for the second time since being acquired from the Mariners after the 2016 season. Notably, he was instrumental in the Diamondbacks reaching the World Series in 2023, hitting .329 with a .914 OPS over 17 playoff games.
There’s a lot of uncertainty for the team right now, as Hazen acknowledged. “We need to examine all options to strengthen our roster,” he stated. “If we had traded Marte, it would have significantly weakened us. I don’t enjoy these decisions because, after all, there’s a human element involved. I know it puts players in an uncomfortable position.”
