Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Paul Sewald returned to Citi Field on Saturday to face the New York Mets, the team he played for from 2017-2020.
He closed out the team’s 10-5 win over the Mets., But his victory was only momentary, as the New York Post reported after the game that the relief pitcher had gotten into an altercation with a Mets fan shortly after the win.

Sewald told the paper he thinks he’s “grown up a little bit” since he last pitched at Citi Field.
“But after the game, there were some scumbags yelling and calling me names in front of the kids, and it just reminded me of what I went through when I was here,” he lamented. New York Post“So unfortunately, it was a great reminder of the four years I’ve spent here.”
He didn’t reveal what the fan said, but he seemed upset that it was said in front of his children.
What cannot be printed [the fan] “It’s a shame that he would do something like that in front of his kids. He’s embarrassed, and rightly so,” Sewald said.

“I also said some things that I probably wouldn’t want to see printed. It was one of those things, and it was frustrating not to show emotion in a game that didn’t mean anything and not think I made a big deal out of having him do that. I’m just disappointed.”
Sewald said Mets fans weren’t his biggest fans when he returns to Citi Field in 2022, adding that he returned to the ballpark because he was disgruntled during his time with the Seattle Mariners.
If the best revenge is pitching well, Sewald is off to a good start heading into 2024.
In eight innings, he had a 1.23 ERA with seven strikeouts. He pitched well in the Diamondbacks’ run to the World Series, but gave up six runs in two games against the eventual winner, the Texas Rangers.
