Beeks Swallows Fly During Game but Celebrates Victory
Playing baseball is challenging enough, but Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Jalen Beeks encountered a particularly odd situation during their 8-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday. While pitching, Beeks accidentally swallowed a fly, a rather unusual mishap for a professional athlete.
“Yeah, I swallowed the fly when I lifted my leg,” Beeks explained. “It’s never happened to me before, but we got through it. We won. That’s all that really matters.”
Interestingly, Beeks seemed unfazed by the incident, adding, “I threw up a bit of a monkey agged, but I was fine. It wasn’t a big deal. It’s just a funny story to tell later.”
Initially, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo feared that Beeks might have been hurt, given his reaction on the mound. Lovullo shared, “I was just holding my breath, wondering if it was serious.”
Unfortunately for the Diamondbacks, during the same at-bat as the fly incident, Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle hit a solo home run, which cut their lead to 8-2. Beeks remained in the game and managed to finish strong, securing the final outs.
The Diamondbacks (60-62) are set to face the Rockies (32-89) again in the second game of their four-game series on Friday at 8:40 PM ET.
