Diamondbacks' struggling season might shake up the MLB trade deadline

Mike Hazen is likely to gain even more support soon.

The Diamondbacks may be pushed to shift the Astros into a sales strategy after getting swept in a three-game series on Wednesday.

Arizona has a free agent who sees himself as a prime trade target, alongside third baseman Eugenio Suarez, pitchers Zack Gallen and Merrill Kelly, and first baseman Josh Naylor.

This trade deadline is eagerly anticipated, with many hoping for significant transactions to stir things up. The attention on Arizona is certainly palpable.

The Diamondbacks started the season with high hopes, particularly after signing Ace Corbin Burnes. However, they’ve been hit hard by injuries in the competitive NL West, including Burnes undergoing Tommy John surgery, which might also impact the team’s future in 2026.

While Arizona kicked off the second half with a Cardinal sweep, this last one feels more like an acceptance of their current situation regarding sales. As noted by John Heyman on Twitter, there’s a sense of resignation.

Hazen, the general manager, is well aware that he has four valuable assets that could potentially be traded, especially since they might enter free agency soon.

At 34, Suarez is one of the most sought-after names on the trade market, ranking high in the majors and second in the National League.

He’s frequently associated with the Yankees, but according to Greg Joyce, teams like the Mariners, Cubs, and Tigers might also be looking to make a move.

Hazen is aiming for a bidding war among interested teams to raise Suarez’s trade value.

Moreover, Arizona is set to potentially offload Kelly and Gallen, despite their contrasting seasons.

Kelly, at 36, has had a solid season with a 3.32 ERA over 122 innings and a 1.06 WHIP (walks and hits per inning). He could easily fit into a postseason rotation, especially as many teams seek extra pitching help.

On the flip side, Gallen has faced a challenging year.

The 29-year-old right-hander holds a 7-11 record with a 5.58 ERA, having only once previously recorded an ERA of 4.00 or more in his career.

The team is still hopeful he may find his footing away from Chase Field.

Naylor, a 28-year-old lefty, has logged an .810 OPS with 11 home runs and 58 RBIs.

He’s capable of covering first base or potentially being a strong offensive option, with the Red Sox likely being a team interested in his left-handed bat.

The MLB trade deadline is set for 6 PM on July 31st.
