Frustration Surrounds Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte Amid Trade Rumors
As the MLB trade deadline draws nearer, there’s growing frustration within the Arizona Diamondbacks organization regarding All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte.
Marte, a switch-hitter known for his power, has been a trade target for the team this winter, despite his skill set and a new six-year contract that starts this season. According to reports, there are concerns about his commitment to the team. Recently, he opted out of a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where standout Shohei Ohtani was on the mound. The very next day, he hit a walk-off home run against the same team, adding to the mixed feelings surrounding his choices.
His absence from the Wednesday game was reportedly due to a combination of personal decision-making and ongoing issues with his lower back and hamstring. Marte was cautious about risking further injury, explaining, “We’re all human beings and we all have to have our days here and there,” after his impressive performance the following day.
This isn’t the first time his absence has caused a stir. Around the All-Star break, Marte’s request for time off stirred up tension among his teammates, leading to a subsequent apology due to their dissatisfaction with his decisions.
Marte has been a topic of trade discussions previously, and with the deadline set for August 3 this year, it’s likely he’ll need to step up his game. It’s worth noting that players of his caliber often attract interest, especially as the organization looks to rebuild amid ongoing injuries to the lineup and pitching staff.
Given his relatively low contract through the 2030 season—valued at six years and $116.5 million—it’s expected that Marino could be traded for a significant return. He also holds a player option for the 2031 season when he’ll be 37.
While Marte typically plays second base, his versatility allows him to play in center field and shortstop during his 12-year career. He has also been named an All-Star three times, including the last two seasons.
Currently, Marte’s batting average stands at .250, with an OPS of .754—his lowest since 2022. He has hit 11 home runs and has recorded 37 RBIs and 37 runs scored in 60 games this season.
