Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s Funeral
On Thursday, Dick Cheney’s funeral in Washington attracted significant attendance from prominent Democrats who had been vocal opponents during his tenure under President George W. Bush. Notably absent were President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, who did not receive invitations.
Among the attendees were familiar faces like MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow, a longstanding critic of Cheney, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Democratic strategist James Carville, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Dr. Anthony Fauci, and former Vice President Al Gore also paid their respects.
Seated prominently were former President Joe Biden, former first lady Jill Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, alongside Mr. Bush and former Vice President Mike Pence, who offered praise for Cheney during the service.
A number of leading Republicans were present as well, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD). However, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), known for his disagreements with Cheney’s daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), did not attend.
Interestingly, the White House has refrained from extending formal condolences to Cheney’s family since his passing on November 3, only lowering the flag at the presidential residence as mandated by law.
At the funeral, Liz Cheney, who co-led the committee investigating President Trump’s involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots, spoke alongside her father’s longtime cardiologist, who shared anecdotes about Cheney’s resilience amid serious health challenges, including a heart attack at 37.
The former critics’ unexpected affection for Cheney was evident last year when he endorsed then-Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris against Trump, stating, “In the 248-year history of our country, no one has posed a greater threat to our country than Donald Trump.”
Cheney criticized Trump’s actions, indicating that he attempted to undermine the election process through deceit and aggression, declaring, “We cannot trust him with power again.”
