WASHINGTON – Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) announced Wednesday that he would not seek re-election in 2026, and he said he would “give the torch” to the party’s promising leader.

“Deciding whether to run for reelection or not was not easy. I really love the job of being a US Senator,” Durbin said. “But in my mind, I know it’s time to pass through the torch.”
The 80-year-old added that the “strong democratic bench” was “ready to serve” in his place, without naming an immediate successor, promoting his support for Illinois Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth, replacing him as the second and second generation of minority leader Chuck Schumer.
